Salary to Hourly Calculator
Convert an annual salary into an equivalent hourly rate from your hours per week and weeks worked per year, with weekly and monthly gross pay.
How salary-to-hourly conversion works
Start with your gross salary
Enter your annual salary before taxes and deductions: the amount in your offer letter or contract.
Describe your work schedule
Enter the hours you work in a typical week and the weeks you work in a year. Decimals such as 37.5 hours or 50.5 weeks are fine.
Count the hours in a year
Annual work hours are your hours per week × your weeks per year. 40 hours for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours.
Divide the salary
The hourly equivalent is the salary ÷ annual hours, the weekly equivalent is the salary ÷ weeks worked, and the monthly equivalent is the salary ÷ 12.
What changes the hourly equivalent
Why work hours matter
The same salary spread over more hours is a lower hourly equivalent, and over fewer hours a higher one. $60,000 is $28.85 an hour at 40 hours a week, and $30.77 at 37.5.
40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours
2,080 hours is a common reference for a full-time year, but it is only one schedule. The calculator uses the hours and weeks you enter instead of assuming it.
Why monthly pay is annual salary ÷ 12
A year has 12 months but about 52 weeks, so a month is about 4.33 weeks, not 4. Dividing the salary by 12 gives the monthly equivalent directly, without that error.
Paid time off and salaried work
Many salaried workers are paid for holidays and vacation. Enter 52 weeks to spread the salary over the whole year, or fewer weeks to see the rate for the weeks you work. Employers may state their own rates differently.
Gross pay vs take-home pay
Every amount here is gross: before income taxes, payroll taxes, retirement contributions, insurance premiums, and other deductions. Take-home pay is lower, by amounts this calculator does not estimate.
Example calculation
A $60,000 gross salary, converted over a few schedules. Calculated the same way as the calculator above.
40 hours × 52 weeks
- Annual work hours
- 40 × 52 = 2,080
- Hourly equivalent
- $60,000.00 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85
- Weekly equivalent
- $60,000.00 ÷ 52 = $1,153.85
- Monthly equivalent
- $60,000.00 ÷ 12 = $5,000.00
Each amount is divided from the salary and rounded once. The hourly equivalent is not rounded first and then multiplied back up.
The same salary, other schedules
| Schedule | Annual hours | Hourly | Weekly |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 h × 52 wk | 2,080 | $28.85 | $1,153.85 |
| 37.5 h × 52 wk | 1,950 | $30.77 | $1,153.85 |
| 40 h × 48 wk | 1,920 | $31.25 | $1,250.00 |
| 20 h × 52 wk | 1,040 | $57.69 | $1,153.85 |
Working 48 weeks instead of 52 raises the hourly and weekly equivalents, but the monthly equivalent stays at the salary ÷ 12.
Assumptions
- The salary is gross annual pay before taxes and deductions. No taxes, deductions, benefits, retirement contributions, or insurance premiums are calculated.
- Annual work hours are hours per week × weeks worked per year, kept exact for up to two decimal places in each (37.5 × 52 = 1,950 hours).
- The hourly equivalent is the salary ÷ annual work hours. It describes your salary over the schedule you enter and may differ from a payroll hourly rate.
- The weekly equivalent is the salary ÷ weeks worked: the pay per worked week. The monthly equivalent is the salary ÷ 12, never the weekly amount × 4.
- Each amount is calculated from the salary on its own and rounded to the nearest cent once, so no amount carries another's rounding.
- Overtime, bonuses, commissions, unpaid leave, and changes in pay during the year are not modeled. To include a bonus, add it to the salary you enter.
